Miscarriages in First Trimester

The most common reasons for losing pregnancy are miscarriages in the first trimester. Four out of five miscarriages happen before the end of week 12. If baby’s heartbeat can be heard and pregnancy develops normally by the 12th week, chances of miscarriage drop down to 1%.

Doctors believe that in the first trimester miscarriages happen due to factors that no one can control. Miscarriages don’t happen because somebody did something wrong; yet doctors still don’t have the answer to “Why did it happen?” Sometimes, miscarriage is simply unavoidable.

However there are some answers about things that are known to cause a miscarriage. Chromosomal abnormality is often seen as a reason for a miscarriage. There are two theories on why this happens. First one claims that mother’s immune system recognizes problem in baby’s genes and ends pregnancy. Other claims that the growing baby reaches a point where it cannot grow anymore due to chromosomal abnormality which stops the growth so certain genes that are needed are missing.

Food poisoning caused by Salmonella or E. Coli bacteria can also  cause a miscarriage. Some other bacterial and viral infections are known to increase the risk of miscarriage. However, some new researches have shown that some common vaginal infection can also lead to possible pregnancy loss.

Bacterial vaginosis, chlamydia, toxoplasmosis, parvovirus B19 and rubella can all cause miscarriage in the first trimester and are also responsible for pregnancy complications and/or child defects if you get infected by them in the later course of pregnancy.

For more details about these diseases, visit your doctor or physician. If you have ever wondered if coffee can cause you to have a miscarriage, you will have to wait a little bit longer, because there are still no final answers to this question. However, most doctors agree that a moderate intake of caffeine during pregnancy  will not influence your pregnancy.
